Civic Engagement
Through an education rooted in the liberal arts, St. John Fisher University prepares individuals for lives of intellectual, professional, and civic integrity, in which diversity and service to others are valued and practiced.
Community service and civic engagement have been at the heart of St. John Fisher University since its founding by the Congregation of St. Basil in 1948. Service in and to the community continues to be a fundamental component of the University's unique preparation.
Civic Action Plan
Fisher’s civic and community engagement programming provides students with experiences and content that broaden their perspectives and allow for classroom application in Rochester’s neighborhoods and non-profit organizations. Civic learning develops a deep commitment to service that supports the University’s mission, enhances the spirit of collaboration across campus, and strengthens our community.
In the 2015—2016 academic year, President Rooney’s first year in office, he and several members of administration, faculty, and staff developed the Civic Action Plan [pdf], which is currently being implemented in a variety of ways, including the establishment of a new vision for civic and community engagement at the University and the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement.
Institute for Civic and Community Engagement
Fisher established the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement in 2018 to carry out President Rooney’s Civic Action Plan and to form stronger ties between historical community engagement programs of the University: Community-Engaged Learning, Service and First-Generation Scholars programs, and Fisher’s dedication to transformative civic education.
Center for Nonprofit Leadership
A strong voluntary sector is critical to our community's quality of life. Believing that board and professional leadership excellence are complementary, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership offers programs in leadership development and nonprofit management.
