Written by John S. Jacobs, the memoir offers a firsthand account of his life as an enslaved man in North Carolina. The title refers to the approximately 600,000 slaveholders in the U.S. who exerted control over the lives of millions of enslaved individuals. Jacobs chronicles the brutality and dehumanization that enslaved people faced, as well as his eventual escape to freedom and his time in Rochester.
