Health Equity for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Leveraging the Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse

In September of 2024, Dr. Holly Brown, Dr. Debbi Napolitano, and Dr. Jane Tobias of the Golisano Institute traveled to the University of Lublin, located in Lublin, Poland, for the 2nd Central European Nursing Conference. Here, they presented “Health Equity for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Leveraging the Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse”, a presentation focusing on the healthcare inequalities disproportionately experienced by individuals living with IDDs and how addressing the training of the nursing workforce can mitigate this issue.

Promoting Health Equity for Individuals with IDD through the Vehicle of Nursing

A Behavior Analyst Working with Incarcerated Youth: Successes and Barriers

Integrating IDD and Neurodiversity Content into Nursing Curriculum

In April 2024, Dr. Holly Brown and Dr. Janiece DeSocio gave a presentation on integrating IDD and neurodiversity content into nursing curriculum at the International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses. The presentation emphasized the increasing need for inclusive and accessible care, particularly for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Attendees learned solutions for integrating neurodiversity concepts into graduate nursing education curricula, aiming to better prepare APRNs for providing high-quality, equitable, and patient-centered care.

DEI: Where’s the A?

Earlier this month, Dr. Holly Brown and Dr. Beth Kiss, from the Golisano Institute and Dr. Tricia Gatlin from the Wegmans School of Nursing, presented “DEI: Where’s the A?” about integrating DEI teaching strategies for didactic, clinical, or simulation learning experiences into an undergraduate curriculum at the AACN Diversity Symposium in New Orleans.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Transform 2023 Conference was held from November 30 - December 2, 2023. Dr. Beth Kiss from the Golisano Institute and Melissa Bourne, visiting professor in the Wegmans School of Nursing and Golisano Fellowship Mentor, presented a poster, "Revisioning Nursing Curriculum with an Eye on Inclusion: DEI...Where's the A?"

Optimizing Care for Hospitalized Individuals with IDD

In August 2023, Dr. Holly Brown, executive director for the Golisano Institute, led a presentation for IDD Health Equity. It was a part of their Partnering to Transform Health Outcomes with Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PATH-PWIDD) program and was presented virtually to the Advocate Advisory Committee.

Mental Health Care for Youth

In October of 2023, Dr. Holly Brown and Dr. Deborah Napolitano of the Golisano Institute presented to Leadership Rochester. They were joined by Dr. Steve Demanchick from Nazareth University and Dr. April Aycock of the Monroe County Office of Mental Health.

Strategies for Managing Anxiety Disorders in Youth with ASD: It’s All About Interprofessional Collaboration

Dr. Holly Brown and Dr. Debbi Napolitano presented “Strategies for managing anxiety disorders in youth with ASD: It’s all about interprofessional collaboration," at the Western New York Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (WNYRCASD) annual conference on Friday, March 18. 

The presentation emphasized the need for interprofessional communication and decision-making among health care teams, which is essential in the context of understanding the complex interactions between medications and behaviors when working with individuals with ASD and anxiety disorders.
