Explore the dawn of modern civilization and the roots of the English language as a classical studies minor at Fisher.

Many English words and terms have Latin or Greek roots. A grasp of the languages of Rome and of ancient Greece, therefore, is of immense benefit for the understanding of our English language. That is why the classical studies minor features coursework in Greek and Latin, providing a “reading knowledge” of these languages.

The program also relies heavily on the written word to reveal not only ancient Greek and Roman thought, but the inner workings of their cultures as well. Through the study of classical authors and their contexts, you'll gain intimate access to worlds and world views that both resemble and are profoundly "other" than our own.

Program Overview

The curriculum of the classical studies minor exposes you to Latin and Greek masterworks in areas such as literature, mythology, law, medicine, religion, philosophy, and history.

You will be required to take an introductory course on ancient Greece and Rome, but the rest of your classes are up to you. Choose two language courses and three electives covering various elements–including love, sports, philosophy, mythology–of life in these ancient cultures.
