SGA Events Aims to “Brew Change” on Campus

Talking about issues of race, equity, and privilege can be hard and uncomfortable. A new event designed by the Student Government Association is hoping to change that by giving students, faculty, and staff the rare opportunity to walk in the footsteps of a fellow Cardinal.

Brewing Change, to be held at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, in Cleary Family Auditorium, will feature a “privilege walk.” The concept is simple, yet powerful. Attendees will fill out a set of questions anonymously. Those answers will be randomly redistributed among guests, who will then physically respond to the questions by taking a step forward or remaining in place, based on the answers they are given.

The result: an eye-opening look at identity and societal privilege. Zaiya Dillon, president of SGA, also hopes Brewing Change will create meaningful conversation. She believes that more creative, unconventional ways of addressing issues of discrimination and race can propel more action on campus as well.

“I do hope that the discussions after completing the walk will be eye-opening and make students be more comfortable about discussing contentious issues,” she says. “I think faculty, staff, and students can benefit from stepping into the life of another person to understand the complexity of each individual on campus.”
