Fisher Students, Alumni Present at Sports Analytic Conference

Current St. John Fisher College students, along with returning alumni, utilized their knowledge and skills from the classroom to produce a compelling presentation at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Sports Analytics Conference (RIT SAC) on September 14. Presenters Robert Weber ’20 and Eddy Tabone ’18 showed off their work which focused on the Knighthawks, Rochester’s professional lacrosse team.

The RIT SAC is an annual, one-day workshop that is used as a platform for state-of-the-art research in analytics for college and professional hockey and other sports.

Weber and Tabone presented their group work on subjects including network analysis of the 2018 National Lacrosse League Finals, entry-draft analysis, and a shooting heat-map using proximity-shooting-percentage and frequency. Other Fisher students and alumni included in the project were Kaili Saffran ’20, Jake Tarnowski ’21, Rachel Makowski 22’, and Kaylee Gassner ’18.

Weber and Tabone participated in the conference alongside notable presenters such as Namita Nadakumar, a quantitative analyst for the Philadelphia Eagles National Football League team, Andrew Thomas, a former lead analytics researcher for the Minnesota Wild professional ice hockey team, and others. Weber is noted as one of the few undergraduates to present.
