Fisher Pharmacists Administer COVID Vaccines at Area Hospital
Dr. Alex DeLucenay, associate professor of pharmacy practice at the Wegmans School of Pharmacy, served on the team of pharmacists administering the first COVID-19 vaccine doses to high-risk colleagues in the intensive care units, emergency department, and COVID floors at Rochester General Hospital (RGH).
DeLucenay, who practices as a clinical pharmacist at RGH, helped staff the hospital’s first vaccine clinic alongside nurses, physicians, and pharmacists, including alumnae Drs. Taylor Rider and Vu Dang.
He believes the team will continue to administer vaccines, and hopes to have his students from the School join the effort as well. He said the vaccine signals the beginning of a long process of ending the pandemic, but that continued vigilance is necessary to mitigate spread.
“This is a team effort among everybody in health care, from pharmaceutical scientists who develop the vaccine to those that deliver food to patients sick in their rooms,” DeLucenay said. “Like everybody in health care, I hope and pray that this leads to herd immunity that will lead to less death, suffering, and isolation for people throughout the world.”
