School of Business Hosts Food Drive

Students, faculty, and staff in the School of Business are hosting a food drive to benefit Bethany House. Organized by Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) and the Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC), the drive will run from now until Friday, Nov. 13.

Collection bins can be found in the Salerno Center for American Enterprise, Cyber Café, outside of Haffey Hall, the Campus Center atrium, and outside of Basil Auditorium. The most desired products are cereal, canned vegetables, and any non-perishables items.

“Though the midst of unprecedented times, one thing has remained constant. That is the “Fisher family” mentality, which means that we take care not only of each other, but our community,” said LucyMarie Gaulin ’21, an accounting major and president of DSAC. “This is the reason why BGS and DSAC collaborated to come up with a way that we could, safely, continue to take care of our Rochester community, the one that gives so much to Fisher.”

The groups selected Bethany House because of their mission of providing disenfranchised women with both tangible and intangible support. Their services are free and opened to all women in the Rochester community, and do not restrict by age, race, income, religion, or sexual orientation.

Dr. Jason Berman, professor of management and faculty advisor for BGS, said that while he remembers his family donating cans of soup or vegetables to food drives throughout his childhood, he never knew hunger and said it was hard for him to understand how anyone could not afford to put food on the table.

“I did not associate food with power or privilege; I took food for granted,” he explained. “Today I have a different understanding.  America produces an abundance of food; enough food to sustain all of its population’s nutritional needs. Grasp this fact: it is within our power to end hunger and build healthier, more vibrant communities but only if we have the social, political and moral resolve to act.  I choose to be part of the solution. You can too.”
