The annual Career Fair, hosted by the Center for Career and Academic Planning, is scheduled from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.
The Career Fair is a golden opportunity for your student to jumpstart their career, whether they are seeking spring and summer internships or full-time positions post-graduation.
What to Expect
The Career Fair will feature close to 100 employers from various industries, providing a diverse range of opportunities for students. In addition to networking with potential employers, there will be a professional headshot station where students can get high-quality photos for their LinkedIn profiles.
Preparation is Key
To make the most out of this event, preparation is crucial. Encourage your student to:
- Research Attending Employers: Understanding who will be at the fair and what opportunities they are offering can help your student prioritize which booths to visit and tailor their questions and interactions accordingly.
- Update Résumé and LinkedIn Profiles: An up-to-date résumé and a professional LinkedIn profile are essential. Employers will be looking for candidates who present themselves well on paper and online.
- Practice Interacting with Employers: First impressions matter. Encourage your student to practice their elevator pitch and be ready to discuss their skills, experiences, and career aspirations confidently.

Five Reasons Why Attending the Career Fair is Beneficial for First-Year College Students
- Building Professionalism: Career fairs are an excellent opportunity for students to practice and enhance their professionalism. From preparing a résumé to dressing appropriately and engaging in formal conversations, students gain firsthand experience in presenting themselves as young professionals. These skills are crucial and will serve them well in job interviews, internships, and future career opportunities.
- Networking Opportunities: Networking is a powerful tool in any career. At a career fair, your student will have the chance to meet and interact with professionals from various industries. Building a network of contacts early on can open doors to mentorship, advice, and job opportunities. Even casual conversations can lead to valuable connections that may benefit them throughout their college years and beyond.
- Expanding Connections: Expanding their network is not limited to professionals; students also get to meet peers who share similar interests and career aspirations. These connections can lead to study groups, collaborative projects, and friendships that provide support and motivation throughout their college journey.
- Exploring Career Options: Many first-year students are still uncertain about their career paths. Career fairs expose them to a wide range of industries and job roles, allowing them to explore different career options. Speaking with employers can provide insight into various fields, helping students make more informed decisions about their majors and career goals.
- Identifying Future Internship Opportunities: Internships are a critical step in gaining real-world experience. Career fairs often feature companies looking for interns, providing students with the chance to learn about and apply for these opportunities. Securing an internship early can give your student a competitive edge and a clearer understanding of their chosen field.
