Countdown to Commencement: Alberto Gutierrez
Political science and legal studies major Alberto Gutierrez is the next featured senior in the Countdown to Commencement video series. He was nominated by Dr. Kathleen Donovan, an assistant professor of political science.
“Alberto is exactly the kind of student we want at Fisher, who makes the classroom discussions better, who makes people feel welcome, and who will give an event 110 percent,” said Donovan, pointing to a recent forum Gutierrez planned around the issue of gun policy, bringing in experts to address both sides of the debate.
Indeed, Gutierrez has taken advantage of every opportunity at Fisher, joining the Political Action Club, Mock Trial Team, and attending EuroSim, a simulation of the European Union’s policymaking process. A First Generation Scholar, he was a member of the Student Government Association, and served as an election inspector, working at poll sites during the most recent election. He was also involved in the Gay Straight Alliance and helped plan the annual Day of Celebration, a campus-wide tradition hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs.
“My collective experiences here really challenged me and helped me live more,” he said. “College is a once in a life time experience. You want to make friends and make memories that you can look back at and say, ‘I enjoyed that.’”
With his energy and passion for law, Donovan sees Gutierrez’s future as nothing but bright.
“I see Alberto going to law school, and serving the community in some capacity, perhaps working for a legal non-profit, or as a community organizer. Great things, for sure,” she said.
