Fisher’s Douglass Images to Exhibit in Brazil
The Special Collections at Lavery Library has contributed two photographs of Frederick Douglass for the 34th Bienal de São Paulo, organized by Fundação Bienal de São Paulo.
Biennials are large-scholar contemporary art exhibitions; São Paulo’s bienal will open in September 2020.
The images were shared digitally with the organization so that the Foundation can use them in their exhibits creatively, said Michelle Price, outreach and science librarian.
The two images given to the Foundation were identified as unique in the world, thanks to the recent text, Picturing Douglass.
According to the Foundation, “Frederick Douglass’s trajectory is fascinating and inspiring, both from a historical perspective and when you look at it from today’s standpoint, especially in the context of a visual art exhibit, considering how extraordinarily conscious he was of the importance and implication of the pictures.”
