St. John Fisher University to Host Cardinal Nurse Camp
This June, the Wegmans School of Nursing at St. John Fisher University will host its inaugural Cardinal Nurse Camp for rising juniors and seniors in high school interested in a career in the nursing profession.
The Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday, June 26 to Friday, June 30. It will take place both at the Wegmans School of Nursing with a shadow day at Rochester Regional Hospital.
The purpose of the camp is to help high school students learn more about a career in the nursing field. Activities include CPR and stop the bleed training, shadowing nurses at Rochester Regional Hospital, experiencing a nursing scenario simulation and virtual reality experiences, skill lab activities, community service, and more. Students will be able to meet alumni as well as current Fisher nursing students to hear about their experiences with the undergraduate program on campus. Participants will also learn more about the college application process.
Cardinal Nurse Camp is an initiative of the Fisher Improves Nursing through Diversity (FIND) program and is being funded in part by a $1.1 million Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Nursing Workforce Diversity Program grant over three years. The Wegmans School of Nursing was one of only eight grant awardees in New York State. This grant marks the fifth round of funding—totaling more than $5 million dollars—that the University has received since 2016 from HRSA.
“What is most exciting about Cardinal Nurse Camp is showing students all of the possibilities in the nursing profession and expanding their vision to see what is possible for them. Students heard a lot about health care in the pandemic but don’t know all of the possibilities in the field, and we hope they can find an early home at Fisher through Camp,” said Dr. Tricia Gatlin, dean of the Wegmans School of Nursing.
Online registration is now open and the deadline to participate is May 15, 2023; the fee is $400 with lunch included. For more information, call the Wegmans School of Nursing at (585) 899-3834.
