Softball, Baseball Secure Empire 8 Titles, Men’s Lacrosse Continues NCAA Run
On Saturday, May 11, the St. John Fisher University softball and baseball teams both defeated Utica University teams to each claim Empire 8 Championship titles.
The softball team faced an uphill battle on Saturday, coming into the Empire 8 Championship Final needing to win two games over Utica to secure the title. The Cardinals achieved the goal with a 4-2 win in the first game and then an impressive 9-1 victory in five innings. The results make it back-to-back conference titles for the Cardinals and their ninth in program history.
The baseball team enjoyed a big fourth inning in the title game to helped catapult them to a 13-4 victory over Utica. The win secured the Cardinals their fourth-straight conference title.
Both the softball and baseball teams will advance to their respective NCAA Tournaments.
The men's lacrosse team upset yet another nationally ranked team to advance to the NCAA DIII National Tournament Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Cardinals battled St. Lawrence University, who were ranked no. 4 by Inside Lacrosse and no. 8 by USA Lacrosse. Fisher won 11-10, leading St. Lawrence throughout the game. The Cardinals will face-off against No. 6-ranked Tufts University on Saturday, May 18; the location and time of the game are still to be determined.
