Countdown to Commencement 2025: Degraj Suberi

February 24, 2025

The next student featured is first-generation student Degraj Suberi. A dedicated and diligent scholar, he is pursuing a double major in physics and math, with a minor in computer science. Suberi was nominated by Megan Walker, TRIO Student Support Services advisor, for his outstanding commitment and academic achievements.

Suberi was attracted to Fisher thanks to the First-Generation Scholarship along with the campus location.  He has been largely responsible for the active Asian Student Union (ASU) and made it the vibrant and energized organization it is today. With his dedication to the growth and his undeterred commitment, he now serves as the club’s president.  He has also played a huge role in creating an inclusive community in the TRIO SSS program, connecting often with all students, offering community and academic support, and even hosts lively UNO Tournaments in the Scholar's Lounge.

“Fisher gave me a community the moment I stepped foot on campus.  Now I am part of that community, and have the opportunity to give back to it while building it more,” said Suberi.

Of all his achievements at Fisher, Suberi is most proud of his individual research. He was accepted into the University of Rochester's research experience for undergraduates in a 10-week program - his first time doing independent research. Soon after that, he conducted separate research with Dr. Alexey Ignatchenko with a focus on material science, and was given the opportunity to present this research at a conference in Boston.

Suberi feels his legacy will be most remembered through his impact on ASU and his help as a peer tutor. “I hope I’ve helped students overcome the obstacles that held them back from any goal they were trying to achieve.”

Walker knows that Suberi will be remembered fondly by the Fisher family for the impact he made as a student. “I expect Degraj will continue to lead in a caring way wherever his journey takes him. He is generous, intelligent, and a natural leader and I will remember Degraj’s kindness and his welcoming spirit.”
