Countdown to Commencement 2025: Emma Kane

April 11, 2025

The next student featured is Emma Kane. A committed and hardworking student, she is pursuing an education in nursing and is the co-captain of the rowing team, she is also a member of the Honors Program. Kane was nominated by Jon Covney, head coach of women's rowing.

According to Kane, she had two non-negotiables in her search for the perfect college fit:  an excellent nursing program and a rowing team. Thankfully, Covney was able to meet Kane and recruit her to the Fisher family. With her undeterred dedication to the sport of rowing, she was named co-captain in her sophomore year, a position she held onto for the rest of her intercollegiate athletics career. On top of this impressive achievement, she is also a Service Scholar, a part of the advisory council of the Service Scholars Program, a member of the Athlete 2 Athlete Club, and an Honors Scholar. Rowing has given Kane many memorable experiences including traveling and competing in many different states.

Covney has immense respect for Kane and all of her accomplishments. “Balancing waking up at 5 a.m. to get on the water for a 6 a.m. practice, on top of being a Service Scholar as well as nursing student is not easy, but Emma is a shining example. As a captain of the rowing team, she welcomes new walk-on athletes who have no experience and treats them the same as those who have been on the team. She is the true definition of a student-athlete,” he said.

An important topic in Kane's life is mental health, which is one of the original reasons she was drawn to the field of nursing. She applied for and was accepted into Strong Memorial Hospital's Pediatric Psychology Unit. This opportunity has allowed her to be there for others that are struggling and to help people in need.

“I will always continue to say this, but Fisher truly does have that Fisher family identity. I feel very confident in my abilities as a person, as an athlete, a future nurse, a sister, a daughter, a friend, everything. Fisher helped me find who I am and that has helped me build this desire and need to succeed in leaving Fisher. This school has positively impacted who I am to a high degree,” she said.
