Fisher Students Travel to London over Winter Break
This winter break, seven St. John Fisher University students toured the United Kingdom, exploring the media and theater of Northern Europe.
St. John Fisher’s Department of Media and Communication has partnered with Cayuga Community College since the 1990s to offer the experience abroad every few years. The trip was led by Professor Jeremy Sarachan of the Division of Literature, Communication, and the Arts, and included Fisher students Lauren Arena, a criminology and criminal justice major; and media and communication majors Rory Cook, Abby Dwyer, Brooke Eastman, Nicole Pomerleau, Mallory Schake, and Lejla Zornic. Alumna Keara Cook and three students from Nazareth University, Cayuga Community College, and Monroe Community College also joined the trip.
During the eight-day visit, the group visited Stonehenge, the Roman baths in Bath, and Tate Modern, a modern art history museum. In their exploration of media and theater, the group toured Warner Brothers Studios in London (with its emphasis on Harry Potter), BBC studios in Cardiff, the Globe Theater, and National Theater. Students also viewed a production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the National.
During more flexible times, students choose to visit the British Museum, the Tower of London, the National Portrait Gallery, the Hard Rock Café, and many other London offerings. Some students attended theater performances, including Phantom of the Opera and The Tempest (starring Sigourney Weaver).
“This was a great opportunity to learn about the entertainment industries from different perspectives on a different continent. Additionally, the brevity of the trip made the opportunity accessible to these interested students,” said Sarachan.
