Gift Enriches Scholarship Fund for Students in Wegmans School of Pharmacy
A new $600,000 gift to the Wegmans School of Pharmacy will continue to support scholarships and technology for incoming students to the Doctor of Pharmacy program.
Given by Ludmilla (Lucy) P. Malmberg, a nationally renowned pharmacist, educational philanthropist, and entrepreneur, this new gift enriches the Lucy P. Malmberg Pharmacy Endowed Scholarship program, created in 2021. The gift will also continue to fund the School’s participation in the iFisher: Next Generation Learning Initiative—providing an iPad, tech case and keyboard, and Apple pencil to students in the campus pathway, as well as School of Pharmacy technology enhancements.
On the University’s I Heart Fisher Giving Day, Malmberg surprised the School with an additional $300,000 gift in support of pharmacy students.
“The Lucy P. Malmberg Pharmacy Scholarships are the largest and most impactful pharmacy scholarships in the history of St. John Fisher University. Through these scholarships, many students who may not have been able to afford a pharmacy education have thrived,” said Dr. Christine Birnie, dean of the School. “Her support has allowed students to learn and develop the abilities necessary to be pharmacists of distinction in their academics, professionalism, and service to others. We are especially thankful to Lucy Malmberg for providing these opportunities for our students and program.”
The Malmberg Pharmacy Scholar Award is available to eligible students enrolling in the School’s Pharm.D. campus pathway, totaling up to $40,000 across four years for each recipient. Over the years, Malmberg has continued to support the scholarship fund by both expanding the endowment and providing immediate scholarships to students entering the pharmacy campus program.
As co-founder and former chair of the Board of Directors of Wedgewood Pharmacy in New Jersey, Malmberg helped to transform the company from a local community pharmacy into the largest specialized compounding pharmacy in the United States. She has spent her career serving as a staunch advocate for the profession, even arguing successfully before the Supreme Court to protect the rights of licensed pharmacists in serving their patients and prescribers. She is a long-time member of several national and international pharmacy professional associations and has served on the Board of Trustees for the University of the Sciences, home to her alma mater, the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.
Over the last several years, Malmberg has become a strong advocate for the Wegmans School of Pharmacy, serving on the Dean’s Advisory Council and sharing her expertise in compounding with students through guest lectures.
In 2023, the University acknowledged her continued support by inducting her into the Presidents Society, which honors philanthropists who have made lifetime gifts totaling $1 million or more.
