Out of the Darkness Campus Walk Brings Suicide Awareness to Light

February 7, 2025

St. John Fisher University will once again host the annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The walk, now in its ninth year at Fisher, is designed to engage college students in the fight to prevent suicide and support mental health awareness.

The event will be held on Sunday, April 6, check-in begins at 10 a.m. in Cleary Family Auditorium in Kearney Hall; the walk throughout campus will officially start at 11:15 a.m.

“While students are arriving at Fisher with more self-knowledge and awareness of mental health, suicide remains a taboo topic for most people. The resources for suicide awareness and support have increased in recent years but we really cannot share or promote these resources enough,” said Rebecca Kieffer, director of the Health and Wellness Center. “The AFSP of Western New York has been a wonderful partner to our campus and we continue to look to them for their resources, training, and support when it comes to the issue of suicide.”

In addition to the walk, the Health and Wellness Center will be hosting a themed, You Matter Week, beginning on Wednesday, April 2 and concluding with a Wellness Fair on Tuesday, April 8.
