#Fisher2019: Mental Health Counselor Finds Meaning in Work
Shantel Giles is a natural listener and throughout her life, friends and family have viewed her as a confidant and source of advice.
This month, Giles will use her natural abilities and the skills and knowledge she learned at the Wegmans School of Nursing in her new role as a mental health counselor. Giles, who graduated in May with a master’s degree in mental health counseling, will join the staff at Rochester Regional’s Greece Behavioral Health Center while working on her licensure exams.
She says her time at Fisher—from the supportive faculty to an internship experience at Strong URMC—taught her that she could be a meaningful counselor.
“Fisher has provided me with a perfect blueprint for counseling and I feel confident that I can take it from here,” she said, adding that the value of her education is unparalleled. “I have learned so much both educationally and in life. I do not think I could have received this educational experience anywhere else.”
