The Office of Safety and Security is a full-time, 24-hour, 365-days-a-year operation. Our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to live, work, and study.
Safety and security officers are proprietary, New York State-certified security officers of the University. They receive their authority to maintain public order on the campus from Section 6430 of the New York Education Law. This requires all colleges and universities in New York to adopt and file with the regents and commissioner of education “rules and regulations for the maintenance of public order on college campuses and other college property.” In protecting the academic interests of the institution and ensuring an orderly environment for the promotion of educational progress, Safety and Security is empowered to enforce University regulations and policy.
Safety and Security coordinates all requests for services from law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and other emergency medical and environmental response teams to campus. They conduct foot, mobile, and bike patrols of campus residence halls, and academic buildings 24 hours per day.
We directly act upon our motto of “serve, guide, and protect:”
Serve – escorts, unlocks, jump starts, investigate.
Guide – direct proper behavior, educate to rules and laws.
Protect – check suspicious persons and behavior.
